(a) This young man had undergone a FUE procedure in order to allow him to wear his hair very short without any scarring being noticeable. The photo shown above revealed how he looked wearing his hair substantially longer than he had originally planned. He was unhappy with this result and came for revision of the scarring from his prior procedure. (b) This photo taken shortly before the FUE revision reveals the punctate scars in the donor area. The statements made by some FUE practitioners, that FUE leaves “no scarring” and one can shave one’s head without it being noticeable are obviously inaccurate. The physician who carried out the procedure had tried to keep within the “safe donor area” but harvested too many grafts from that area. (c) This is an intraoperative photo showing where FU containing 2 to 3 hairs just superior to the prior donor area were removed in a session I carried out. These graft sites were farther apart than on the first occasion, and a smaller (0.8mm) punch was utilized than on the first occasion. The grafts that we obtained were placed into the most noticeable scars in the patient’s prior donor area scars.
Once again, showing these photos is the equivalent of showing the types of horrible scarring from strip harvesting that are shown on some web sites that are promoting FUE. Such strip scars are as atypical of skilled strip harvesting as this photo is of skilled FUE.
